My goal in teaching is to interest the students in
education so they will consider furthering their education and have a better
chance at success in their lives. My
teaching field is mathematics and my main concern is how I am going to draw
from students an interest in mathematics.
For a long time, I have heard multiple reasons about how they do not
like mathematics and questions about having to learn it. Mathematics is one of the subjects that cross
all the fields of education; students must achieve in mathematics in order to
succeed. If they are handicapped in the
mathematics, it will more than likely reduce any ambition that they have for
their future.
A good education is founded on a highly interactive communication between teacher and students. Passive learning will only last a short period of time, but active learning should last a lifetime. Students will gain interest and participate more if they could relate a subject to their everyday lives. I would like to gain an in-depth knowledge of mathematics through books, magazines, the internet, news media, and other materials so I could help students better relate mathematics to their lives. I would like to give instruction to students that could expand beyond the boundaries of the textbooks.
As a teacher, I would provide similar opportunities to learn and to benefit from schooling regardless of their cultural background or family circumstances. I am ready to promote equality in the classroom through words and actions.
The teacher’s job is to impart knowledge of the subject but how I deliver the subject matter could make difference in each student’s life. I want students to think that mathematics is not difficult, that it is a fun and useful subject. If they do not love it, at least they can learn to use it and continue their lives without fear of mathematics. I hope my decision to become a teacher makes a difference in students’ perception about education.
